Letter Knowledge

Letter knowledge is the first step into the literacy of students. Letter knowledge enables a child to recognize all of the letters of the alphabet, in both lower and capital letters. Letter knowledge goes far beyond just recognizing the letters. Students must possess the ability to understand not only the sounds of letters and how to recognize them individually and out of place from the alphabet. Letter knowledge is crucial when students learn how to read because it helps them to develop strong decoding skills.

The core phonics survey created by scholastic can be used through K-12 as both a pre and post assessment to instructions.  The test should only take approximately 10-15 minutes to conduct and can be used as screening measures to provide data about the growth and mastery of an instructional period.
