Interest Inventory
Literacy Interest Inventories can assist teachers and students in setting goals for reading. This tool can be used to group students with similar interest and help the teacher in designing activities that capture the student’s attention. Simply stated Literacy Interest Inventories assist teachers in meeting the needs of their students while capturing their attention.
The reading interest inventory created by Holly Smucker ask questions that give an insight to what the student likes to read, how much they read, and how they learned to read. This inventory has a total of 12 questions that identify how much the student like to read at home and what type of books etc., they have if any. I like that it asks the question; “If you know someone is having trouble reading, how would you help that student?” Answering this question lets the teacher see what works best for the student filling out the inventory and should be practiced if the student has reading issues.

The reading interest inventory created by Laura Candler gives the students a chance to tell you if they like reading or not and why. Students are allowed to tell the teacher the topics that they like to read and why they like them. The last page of this survey offers a Likert scale for students that offers five choices and a spot for the student to state whether or not the students has “never done it.” This inventory is great for students in elementary preferable 2nd grade and above. The use of faces or emoticons would allow you to use this survey in earlier grades.
