Sight Word Vocabulary

Sight words are a special set of words that frequently occur in most material that students encounter.  Due to their high frequency in written material it becomes essential that students recognize sight words instantly.  Children cannot become fluent readers without knowing their sight words, especially those with similar beginnings, e.g., when, where, what or this, that, and those.

Dolch Sight words are the most frequently found words in the English Language.  Each assessment form has three different columns for teachers to mark in. The simplicity of the form makes this assessment easy to track progress.  This test is given on an individual basis and takes approximately two –three minutes per sheet.  When conducting the assessment, the student is supposed to respond by saying the word when shown.  There are five different assessments that reach kindergarten through third grade.
